NOTE: These are in no particular order.
-Where the Wild Things Are
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this movie, I will still blubber like a baby, perhaps as a way of mourning my lost childhood. This is the ultimate fantasy movie. I wouldn't say it's for kids, because it does get quiet and its rather deep, so for the adults in the audience (as least for me), it was a way of reliving my past childhood that basically just disappeared from sight. Plus the line "I'll eat you up; I love you so" still makes my heart wrench and gives me goosebumps. I take a different meaning out of it, I suppose. I think it's beautiful.
-Pirate Radio
Just a fun, fun movie with a kick ass cast and soundtrack. It contains 2/3 of the main IT Crowd cast, so that was what really made my mom and I want to go see it. It may have seemed a bit too long, but in my opinion, it was really just worth it to see the shenanigans they were getting into next.
-Inglorious Basterds
A fucking Tarantino masterpiece. This is one of the only movies I saw 3 times in theaters (and watched once online haha). I can't wait to get my Christmas money, cause this will be in my DVD collection before the end of the weekend, I can promise you that haha. I know a lot of people dislike it because of all the dialogue, but if you really pay attention to all of it, it really is important to the whole story. Plus the ending and all of the action sequences absolutely makes up for it.
-Zombieland
ZOMBIELAND! A good movie to feed this years' obsession of zombies; just a good old fashioned zombie killing flick. Plus the cameo by (dfdsfgrbs) is fucking genius. Didn't see it coming at ALL lol. This is another one I could watch over and over again, and I'm sure I will once it's released on DVD.
-Taking Woodstock
If you already were or got into the Woodstock spirit this year (or of course prior), then this movie might have been on your list. It's definitely a movie thats better the second time. It IS a little long, mind you, and they dont really show what happened at Woodstock (other than the acid orgy...that was pretty sweet...Oh, and the mud slide), but for me it was still interesting nonetheless. I thought all of the characters were interesting in their own ways (the guy who played Michael Lang was the cutest thing I've ever seen hahaha), the actors who played his parents were absolutely hilarious, and it just became a really fun film to watch. I suggest renting it at least once...then watch it twice haha.
-Last Chance Harvey
I hadn't gotten the chance to catch this in theaters, but I rented it and instantly fell in love with it. First of all- Emma Thompson is my favorite ever ever ever. Second, the whole love story, while a little strange and different (which I guess is what makes it great), is heartwrenching and utterly sweet. I say if you're just looking for a sweet (and a little sad) romantic movie, this is one to definitely pick up.
-The Hangover
Of course, I had to choose the bro movie of the year lol. Full of laughs, a fuckingly awesome cast, this movie really just made the summer. Unfortunately, personally for me, it was just a movie I watched once or twice and am really not sure I wanna watch it again. Not saying it isn't good, but it's not a repeat type of movie. Only for potheads and frat parties.
-Away We Go
IN LOVE IN LOVE IN LOVE with this movie. Can't you tell? Near the end it did drag, but that was the only bad thing I could say about it. You would never think that Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski could work so well together, but it was remarkable. Just another classic indie love story. Personally, I think it's still underrated.
DISAPPOINTMENTS:
Funny People
BIGGEST disappointment of the year. I just...I really don't wanna even talk about it. I waited, I think 6 or 7 months for that movie to come out, got myself alll hyped up for it, then laughed maybe 3 times, and after about the 50 minute mark, it literally just ran out of plot and I was antsing to just get up and leave. It felt like it was about 4 hours long, honestly. Just...UGHHHHH.
Observe and Report
A less cuter version of Paul Blart, with more swearing and annoying characters. Did not want.
Sunshine Cleaning
I really looked forward to this movie and thought it was gonna be great and funny and incredibly interesting, but mostly when I watched it I just felt sad and bored. I hate to admit it, because I LOVE Emily Blunt and Amy Adams (and of course, Alan Arkin), but I guess it just wasn't for me.
